Hazelnut Syrup: Flavoring Guidance for Coffee and Desserts

Hazelnut syrup adds sweetness and nutty flavor to coffee, lattes and dessert toppings. Concentrated hazelnut flavoring has a different job: it adds flavor in a small amount without replacing the sugar, liquid or texture supplied by a syrup.

This guide replaces an earlier homemade-syrup recipe while its formulation and storage directions are reviewed. It is flavoring guidance, not a tested syrup recipe.

Hazelnut syrup and extract are not interchangeable

If a recipe calls for hazelnut syrup, use a syrup or a tested syrup recipe with its own preparation and storage directions. Do not replace that quantity with concentrated extract. If you want to adjust hazelnut flavor separately from sweetness, a compatible water-soluble concentrate can be useful in a measured trial.

Dolce Flav Natural Hazelnut Extract is water-soluble and intended for compatible beverages, batters and sauces. It does not replace the fat, texture or solids of hazelnut paste or actual nuts.

Start with a small, measured trial

The product's technical data sheet, revision 01 dated April 21, 2026, lists a suggested starting range of 2–5 drops per 8 oz serving for its Beverages / Syrups application category. This is manufacturer starting guidance for that serving basis, not a validated formula for a whole batch of concentrated homemade syrup.

  • Check the directions for your exact bottle and application; do not assume another brand or formula has the same strength.
  • For a compatible serving-size beverage trial, start at the lower end of the product's suggested range, mix thoroughly and assess the flavor.
  • Record the product, base quantity and amount added so a successful result can be repeated.
  • For a concentrated syrup intended to be diluted into drinks, confirm the formulation and intended dilution before scaling. Do not apply the serving guidance to the whole batch without that check.

Actual hazelnuts mean tree nuts are present

A syrup made with actual hazelnuts contains tree nuts. The concentrate's ingredient or allergen information does not change that fact. Review every ingredient in the finished recipe, along with the current ingredient and allergen documents for the exact concentrate.

Serving ideas

Use an appropriate hazelnut syrup to sweeten coffee or a latte, or drizzle it over pancakes, waffles or ice cream. Adjust the serving amount to your taste and the finished recipe. Keep sweetness adjustments separate from the concentrate's formulation directions.

Storage depends on the finished recipe

Follow the cooling and storage instructions for the syrup recipe you use. The flavor concentrate's shelf life does not establish how long a homemade syrup is suitable to keep. Changing the sugar ratio or substituting a sweetener can also change the recipe's storage requirements.
